Atrak Watershed
The National Program and Budget Organization is pursuing effective management measures in the Atrak watershed.

The fourth meeting focused on the National Program and Budget Organization and its subordinate units in Golestan and North Khorasan provinces regarding the establishment of an integrated management approach in the watershed was held.

The fourth meeting on integrated management of the watershed was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad, its affiliated organizations and departments, representatives from the Ministry of Energy, and representatives from the planning and management organizations of Golestan and North Khorasan provinces, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at the National Program and Budget Organization (Water, Agriculture, and Environment Affairs).

It was decided that the Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources would take action on reviewing/redefining the health indicators of the pilot watersheds with the aim of enhancing their acceptance, functionality, and comprehensiveness (within the framework of collective thinking). In this regard, collaboration with the planning and management organizations of Golestan and North Khorasan provinces is deemed necessary and emphasized. During this meeting, consensus was reached on 19 key issues or challenges in the Atrak watershed, which are as follows:

  • Organization of customary grazing systems (economic management of pastures)
  • Management of livestock grazing in pastures
  • Control of runoff and floods
  • Organization of rain-fed lands
  • Land use management
  • Development of vegetation cover
  • Protection of biodiversity, habitats, and protected areas
  • Conservation agriculture
  • Control of erosion and sediment production
  • Balancing groundwater levels
  • Enhancing the quality of surface and groundwater resources
  • Preparation of cropping patterns
  • Upgrading infrastructure in the agricultural sector
  • Water management in agriculture
  • Organization of the Atrak River and its shores
  • Education and empowerment of stakeholders in agriculture and natural resources
  • Education and empowerment of stakeholders in the nomadic community
  • Settlement and organization of nomads
  • Land cadastre for farmers
