Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES)

An international conference on soil erosion and sedimentation will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES). The conference will focus on reviewing achievements in sedimentation and soil erosion in China.

 In celebration of the 50th anniversary of UNESCO's IHP and to mark the 40th year of activity of UNESCO Category 2 Center for Erosion and Sedimentation, an international gathering has been organized, inviting representatives from the International Center for Integrated Watershed Management and Biological Resources and the Organization of Natural Resources and Watershed Management of the country, to be held in China for four days starting from the 2nd of October this year, utilizing the experiences of a center with forty years of collaboration with UNESCO, especially in the field of erosion and sedimentation, can provide a valuable opportunity for representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran to benefit from the achievements of this global center in addressing the country's greatest natural resource challenges related to land degradation through developing connections and information exchange.

The International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES) is the first Category 2 center established by UNESCO and the first international center in the water sector in China. This center is part of the Chinese Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year (1984-2024). To demonstrate its role as a Type 2 center under UNESCO, the center has focused on reviewing achievements in the areas of:

  • sedimentation and soil erosion
  • promoting the visibility of water science
  • supporting the 50th anniversary of UNESCO's International Hydrological Program (IHP)
  • aligning with water-related objectives in the United Nations Sustainable Development 2030 program and UNESCO's IHP-IX Strategic Plan (2022-2029).

These topics will be discussed in a scientific gathering from September 23rd to 25th, 2024 (2nd to 4th of October this year) in Beijing. These days coincide with the third International Asia Water Week (one of the largest water-related platforms in Asia).
