ICIMWB (information note)

Category 2 centers and institutes contribute to the execution of UNESCO’s programme through capacity building, exchanging information in a particular discipline; theoretical and experimental research; and advanced training. These centers and institutes form a vast network of associated centers in the fields of water, renewable energy, science policy, biotechnology, geosciences, the basic sciences and remote sensing.

International Center for Integrated Management of Watershed and Bio-Resources in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions (ICIMWB) is the first category 2 UNESCO center related to integrated watershed management in the world and is located in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The differences in northern and southern latitudes, topographic features including internal plains, and climatic conditions of the country have created varied characteristics with rich plant species and vegetation regions in this territory. As a water-themed center, ICIMWB is closely engaged with UNESCO's Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP).The UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP), founded in 1975 following the International Hydrological Decade (1965-1974), is the only intergovernmental cooperation programme of the UN system dedicated to water research and management, and related education and capacity development. It addresses national, regional, and global water challenges, by supporting the development of sustainable and resilient societies. Expanding a holistic understanding of water, improving technical capabilities, and enhancing human and institutional capacities are IHP’s main tools. IHP’s work supports sound, evidence-based water governance and decision-making, drawing on transdisciplinary science, technology, and other knowledge systems.

This center is a UNESCO water science-related center that fulfills its mission under the auspices of this organization. The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran formally submitted to UNESCO a detailed proposal for the establishment of this center in the Islamic Republic of Iran, which finally met with the 38th session of the General Conference of UNESCO's approval. According to this approval, an agreement was signed by the director general of UNESCO and Iran's minister of Jihad agriculture on October 2020. Following this agreement, the office of the center was set up in Natural Resources and Watershed Management organization in the Islamic Republic of Iran in April 2021. Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization (NRWO), formerly called Forests, Range, and Watershed Management Organization (FRWO), is an independent and governmental organization, an executive agency, working under the Ministry of Agriculture-Jihadof I.R. of Iran. NRWO is responsible for the conservation, restoration, development and sustainable use of the renewable natural resources, namely: Forests, Rangelands, Deserts and proper management of watersheds. Consolidation of government's title over natural resource, which are also referred to as state-owned lands and Anfal, is a serious and unique mission of this organization.the main mission of this center is to improve integrated watershed management and related bio-resources in arid and semi-arid regions, strengthening cross-sectoral coordination and improving institutional frameworks for watershed management, generation of knowledge and scientific information, training, capacity building, technical and executive services, research, and international/regional communications toward integrated watershed management.

The main goals of our center are to produce and exchange knowledge and scientific information in the field of Social-Ecology and ecosystem nexus to manage water and biological resources in watersheds and also to provide and enhance integrated management of watersheds through strengthening inter-sectoral coordination, public cooperation, and employing new technology and knowledge.
