The first session from a series of specialized sessions

The first session from a series of specialized sessions on "Integrated Management of Landslides" was held by the International Center for Integrated Management of Watershed and Bio-Resources in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions ICIMWB) under the auspices of UNESCO(on Saturday, August 3, 1403, from 10 am to 1 pm at the location of the Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization.

 

The session was opened by Dr. FarhadRazavi with an emphasis on the importance of specialized sessions in the field of watershed management. He detailed the process of holding a series of specialized scientific sessions and announced that the center will continuously hold these sessions every two weeks on Saturdays as part of the approved plans for the current year.

Dr. Vahid Jafariyan also explained the goals, policies, and programs of the center in organizing specialized sessions, highlighting the importance of a integrated approach to natural resource management. He emphasized the need to articulate comprehensive models based on effective role-playing by actors and stakeholders. He then introduced the session topic and speaker, inviting all attendees to share their opinions, perspectives, and questions.

Dr. Bahman Akbari, the speaker of the session, provided a comprehensive explanation of the phenomenon of landslides. He discussed the history of landslides in Iran, the key activities of the organization in identifying, evaluating, monitoring, and developing risk management models for landslides, as well as the challenges in managing this phenomenon. He also listed the preventive measures taken and proposed suggestions for leveraging landslide management experiences in the future.

At the end of the session, time was allocated for a question-and-answer session, where participants engaged in productive discussions around the topics raised. Issues such as the role of land use change in causing or exacerbating landslides, the interplay between rangeland management and landslides, legal limitations stemming from landslides in recruitment laws and land allocation guidelines, the impact of natural resource revitalization projects on landslide management, the position of landslides in forest and rangeland study and implementation projects, the role of extra-organizational bodies and development projects in exacerbating or controlling landslides, and challenges of internal and external organizational inconsistencies in managing this phenomenon were among the topics discussed and explored. Mr. Vahid Azimi, Mr. Mohammad Ghabadi, Dr. Mehdi Kamali, Dr. Mahdavi, Mr. Ali Bigham, Dr. Mohsen Abdolhosseini, and Dr. Ali Asghar Ghasemi actively contributed with questions and suggestions during this session.
